Design wise, heart shapes are very visceral, don’t you think? They get you right in your feels. I was researching crochet heart patterns this week and after spending an hour on pinterest looking at these symbols of love, I have to say, I was feeling rather romantic. I’m Australian so Valentine’s Day isn’t really a huge thing over here but I just think a little crochet heart pattern is dead useful to have in your box of crochet tricks.
When I was scouring pinterest, I was originally looking for a crochet heart pattern for a street art project I have in mind (there’s a wall across the road from my house that is just begging to be turned into a wall of love) but I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for. They were either too simple (didn’t really look much like hearts) or way too complicated (totally gorgeous but not really accessible to newbie or hobby crocheters) and as I wanted this pattern to eventually be used for a community project, I wanted it to accessible.
I found one pattern that started with a crocheted granny square on the inside and while I loved it, I was looking for something a little more streamlined. I experimented a bit and replaced the granny square middle with a simple square of single crochets instead. It worked out quite well and after a bit of blocking it sat perfectly.
